How NDEO Advocates

Two young kids dressed in black, holding colored scarves, and smiling as they arch and bend their bodies.As an advocate for dance and dance arts education, NDEO seeks to influence policy and resource allocation decisions within the federal government. Along with liaisons and partnering organizations, NDEO participates in setting the national agenda for arts education, defining the significant issues, developing strategic plans,and drafting legislation and policy recommendations. NDEO's commitment to dance education has launched systematic change at local, state, and national levels.

NDEO's recent and current initiatives include:
  • Collaborating with the other national arts organizations to advocate at the highest levels for arts-rich schools. 
  • Working closely with Americans for the Arts to develop advocacy training materials and legislative recommendations as Co-Sponsors of the National Arts Action Summit and Arts Advocacy Day, held annually in the Spring in Washington, D.C.
  • Working with fellow Dance Service Organizations on Dance/USA's Safe Environments Working Group to write a joint unified statement, "Statement In Support of a Healthy, Safe, and Equitable Culture," outlining commitments to safe working environments for all dancers. The statement is due to be released in 2022.
  • Collaborating with other arts education organizations on the  and "Arts Education is Essential" statement (2020) emphasizing funding, maintaining, and growing PreK-12 arts education programs in schools.
  • Every March, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education, recognizes, "Dance In Your Schools Month" by celebrating the artistic and academic achievement of exceptional students through the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA).
  • Researching and publishing vital information in support of dance education, including Evidence: A Report on the Impact of Dance in the K-12 Setting and Research Priorities in Dance Education: A Report to the Nation, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
  • Defining and refining the role of dance in Higher Education through the Dance 2050 program.
  • Writing the National Core Arts Standards for Dance, in partnership with the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) and State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE).
  • Working with over 150 liaisons and partners to develop, deploy, and conduct field training for dance assessments as members of the advisory board of the Arts Education Partnership.
